NAREB Report Highlights Black Homeownership Challenges

The 2025 State of Housing in Black America report, sponsored by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), finds that despite incremental gains in parts of the economy, Black homeownership rates remain below that of White households and systemic obstacles continue to limit wealth building through property ownership. Those obstacles include discriminatory lending practices, limited access to mortgage credit, and inequities in housing finance as barriers to Black home buyers.
To combat these obstacles, the report suggests the need to modernize credit scoring metrics to reflect non-traditional credit behavior, tackle appraisal bias, and broaden access to affordable loans.
